*I mean whatever…
The wild journey of a disenfranchised young man from Ohio who meets the love of his life, only to risk losing her through a series of bad decisions and challenging life circumstances.
“I think I adore you.”
Where do we even start with this one Juicers? Apple TV+ new movie Cherry has had a ton of hype on it for awhile, and for good reason. You have the Russo Brothers directing, and oh yeah they just come off directing Captain America Winter Soldier, Captain America Civil War, Avengers Infinity War, and Avengers Endgame, 4 of the best MCU movies. You also have Tom Holland starring in this who of course is our favorite neighborhood Spider Man, but also is starting to establish himself with other roles as well. So yes there was some definite buzz about this project.
Unfortunately folks I do not think it does what it needs to in order to live up to the hype. The movie is extremely stylized which at points feels cool and other times like you are like lets just get on with the story. That story is told over 6 different chapters, which are all very distinct sections of the movie but also of Cherry’s life. We see him as a student, in the military, as a drug addict, as a Bank robber, and more along the way which is interesting, however even with the 2 hour 30 minute runtime, feel rushed. There is just so much. they are trying to cram in, there is just no room to breathe.
I also think a big issue I had is there is just no one to root for. I know you will say well you should be rooting for him to pull through. But honestly he just did too many things that made him a horrible person it was really hard to get behind him by the end of the story. And watching him dragging sweet Emily (Ciara Bravo) down with him is just hard to watch.
Stock Neutral – Tom Holland
I honestly thought this would be the performance that kept him on the rocket ship skyward, but it just never really gets there. He has to put on so many hats in this story, that he nevrer really gets to dig into any of them. Of course he is still a massive star given his role in the MCU, but I still think he has a ton of potential as an all around actor.
Stock Neutral – Joe & Anthony Russo
What do you do after you make 4 of the biggest movies in history? Well Joe & Anthony Russo decided to create an epic style story that is completely character driven. Not what we maybe expected but I really did think it was a cool choice. They put a ton of flair and style into every scene, but as I have said I just think it is too much. They are trying to shove so much in, like with Endgame, but nothing is as fleshed out.
Who’s That Guy/Gal?
Damon Wayans Jr. – 38 IMDB Acting Credits
It was just great to see him as the drill sergeant and you would never know he was there if you were not looking close. I like him a lot as an actor and I hope he continues to rise in the movie world.
*A couple other tidbits
- I thought Ciara Bravo was great in what she was asked to do, it was again just really hard to watch her character go down that path.
- Michael Gandolfini!
- The Marvel style intro music was cool to see.
- The Henry Jackman score was fantastic and maybe the best part of the movie.
I am not saying the Russo’s should go back to comic book movies because I love that they are taking risks. I just hope they get a better script for the next one because they are very talented. Even if there is some great work in the technical department, overall this story just did not work for me
