Nobody Review

*Not much to spoil here…

IMDB Synopsis

Hutch Mansell fails to defend himself or his family when two thieves break into his suburban home one night. The aftermath of the incident soon strikes a match to his long-simmering rage. In a barrage of fists, gunfire and squealing tires, Hutch must now save his wife and son from a dangerous adversary — and ensure that he will never be underestimated again.

“Everybody dies… some sooner than others.”

The first time I saw the trailer for this movie, I legitimately thought to myself that this has to be a parody of some kind. There is no way Bob Odenkirk is starring in some John Wick style action thriller, yet here we are folks. Nobody premiered in theaters but is now available on VOD, and boy is it a doozy Juicers.

Nobody is about Hutch Mansell (Odenkirk), who throughout the movie you see display more and more incredible fighting skills. He gets caught up in a situation that he has no interest in, on some level though he seems to enjoy it. He fights nameless and faceless victims throughout but the production and choreography is so good you do not really care about the lack of villain. The reason I mentioned John Wick is because the action scenes are a very similar style. That in your face, overly gruesome, and heavily stylized type of action. Every set piece feels like a dance and you cannot look away.

The story, as I said, is pretty basic, guy gets himself into a situation, and he has to fight his way out, is as easy as I can lay it out. However, a simple story can be saved with great execution and that is what we have here. The main aspect that works so well is that all the actors are fully bought in to the tone of the film and never makes it feel like a parody at all. Sure its a little campy, but we need good fun movies every once in awhile.

Stock Up – Bob Odenkirk

I mean who knew our guy Saul could bring it like this? This is a completely different type of role you would ever think he would take, and he absolutely nails it. What is so hard about what he did is making us believe that he could be an action star, and from the first fight he is in I never felt any doubt. I would absolutely watch him in this role again.

*A couple other tidbits

  • Christopher Lloyd is a national treasure. Every second he is on screen is perfection and needs to be savored.
  • I loved what RZA was doing there just was not enough screen time.
  • Again I am seeing way too many movies with Connie Nielsen and not enough utilization.

This movie kicks a lot of ass to be honest. We need just fun action packed movies sometimes and this movie gives you exactly that. You do not need to focus to much on the story and just enjoy watching Bob Odenkirk absolutely dominate mobster after mobster.
