Boxing Recap 3/15-3/16

What an interesting weekend of Boxing that went down this past weekend. We had a women’s superstar in the making, another defense of a 130lb. title, and of course the coronation of a new Welterweight Superstar. Here is my recap of all the action inside the squared circle.

Friday March 15 – DAZN

The DAZN card started with a Middleweight bout between Maciej Sulecki and Gabriel Rosado (of Creed 1 fame). This was a seemingly walk through for Sulecki until the 9th round when Rosado Buzzed him and dropped him twice! The hometown crowd was going crazy and watching Sulecki survive the 10th after that was edge of your seat type of stuff. I think we will be seeing Sulecki vs WBO Middleweight Champion Demetrius Andrade next.

*Highlights of that fight can be found here.

The second fight on this card was WBA, and IBF Lightweight Champion Katie Taylor vs. WBO Lightweight Champion Rosa Volante. As expected Katie was on a much higher level than Volante and the ref mercifully stopped the fight in the 9th round. I do not know who can handle Katie’s pressure and skills but she will fight WBC Champion Delfine Persoon on June 1 in a full unification fight for the division. That should be a very good fight.

The Main Event of this DAZN card was a defense of Tevin Farmer’s IBF Super Featherweight title against brash Jono Carroll. This had a lot of trash talk and build up to it and it definitely delivered. Carroll brought the heat all fight but did not land as much as he threw. Farmer slowly but surely broke him down to the body and was landing good hard shots in the second half of the fight. Farmer got the decision in scores that were probably wider than they should have been given the nature of the fight. Next I hope to see Farmer vs WBA title holder Gervonta “Tank” Davis.

Saturday March 16 – FOX PPV

The undercard here was a bunch of crap to be honest. Three mismatches that all had extremely early stoppages, which forced the broadcast to drag endlessly with talking heads galore.

*Chris Arreola vs Jean Pierre Augustin Highlights are here.

*Luis Nery vs. McJoe Arroyo Highlights are here.

*David Benavidez vs J’Leon Love Highlights are here.

The Main Event at least delivered in a way that a star seemed to be born in IBF Welterweight Champion Errol Spence. Sure, Mikey Garcia was coming up in weight to face him, but Errol did not use his size advantage like most thought he would. He used his feet, his jab, and his overall boxing IQ to show that Mikey did not belong in there with him.

Spence absolutely looks like one of the best fighters in the world Pound for Pound. I hope we see him Unify with one of the other titleholders in the weight class, but it seems he will be fighting Manny Pacquiao next (pray for the Pac Man)

Mikey will have to go back to the drawing board because it seems like Welterweight might have been a reach for him. He looked out of sorts and just did not throw punches the entire fight. Even though he made it the distance he took a lot of punishment that might hurt him down the line. I would love to see him go back down to Lightweight and give the fans one of the best fights in the world with Pound for Pound king Vasyl Lomachenko.
