IMDB Synopsis

The hypnotic and hallucinatory tale of two lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.

Sometimes you walk out of a movie and you are just like “What the hell did I just watch.” Mostly this happens to me after Christopher Nolan movies, but I had this feeling walking out of Robert Eggers new movie The Lighthouse. I truly think this was a masterclass in film making but man I just do not know If I liked it or not.

The Lighthouse is basically the story of two men played by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson working at the titular Lighthouse, in the late 19th century, and slowly going a little crazy in isolation. We really get to see everything from Flatulence (fancy word for farting, to self pleasure (fancy phrase for masturbating), to just the daily grind of working at a Lighthouse in this time period.

Obviously I know how all of that sounds, and you Juicers are probably like well why the hell would I see this? Like I said it is a true feat in movie making, especially after I learned they only used lenses from the early 20th century, and filming in black and white in order to make this look like the time period. This caused the movie to look unlike any movie I have ever seen, and also made you really uncomfortable at the same time. Another cause for anxiety was the sounds throughout every scene, if it was the smashing waves, or the loud sirens, or just another sonnet from Willem Dafoe, every scene makes you curl up into a ball on some level because of all the senses the movie attacks.

Stock Watch

Stock

Stock Up – Robert Pattinson was amazing in this role and it just furthers his rise to serious actor after starting his career with Harry Potter and Twilight. This was such a hard role, basically being Dafoe’s bitch the whole time, and he played it so well. You could just feel yourself flowing a long with him until the end and I loved it. He is going to be Batman next so his stock is through the roof.

Stock Neutral – Willem Dafoe was also incredible in this movie, but he is incredible in everything he is in. It feels like he is nominated for awards for every movie he is in, and this will be no exception. He was so cruel yet he masked it with Shakespearean sonnets that it was so hard to take your eyes off him.

Stock Up – Robert Eggers had a huge following after his first movie The Witch, and now he will gain more fame with this one as well. He is clearly an Auteur, but we need directors willing to try some craziness to give us good entertainment. So I am in on Robert Eggers.

*A couple other tidbits

  • According to Eggers this resembles the tragedy of Proteus and Prometheus.
  • Apparently this is the third time Robert Pattinson has masturbated in a movie, so there is that.
  • The movie is also not in widescreen furthering the old timey effect.

This was an absolutely weird movie, there is no doubt about that. But as I said I cannot rate this that low because of how well it was made. Eggers is clearly starting a great career and I am excited to see where he goes. But for now we have The Lighthouse.
