This year has been another great year for Cinema in my opinion. We got so many great movies and we finally some big time consistency back at the box office. But, the best for me is seeing how many creative people get to make movies in one year. I mean just look at the list of directors that gave us movies this year.
- Robert Eggers
- Steven Spielberg (God)
- Martin McDonagh (Right on Schedule)
- Matt Reeves
- Sarah Polley
- Gina Prince Bythewood
- James Cameron (*insert its been 84 years gif)
- Guillermo Del Toro
- Park Chan-wook
- Jordan Peele (Building the resume)
- Kevin Smith (Doing his thing)
- Henry Selick (FINALLY)
- Sam Raimi
- James Gray
- Damien Chazelle
- George Miller
- Shawn Levy (Does he run Hollywood now)
- Steven Soderbergh (Obviously)
- Baz Luhrmann (An insane person)
- Richard Linklater
- Tyler Perry (His movies might be a danger to society)
- Antoine Fuqua (Is he notable anymore?)
- Taika Waititi (Is he losing his touch?)
- Noah Baumbach
- Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (This man is into himself)
- Kenneth Branagh
- Darren Aronofsky
- Robert Zemeckis (LOL)
- The Russo Brothers (They need the MCU badly)
There are of course numerous others, but all of these men and women have won awards and are notable and that is a lot of names. Seeing how many of these people made movies it was really hard to narrow my list down to 10, but here it goes, the official Apple Juice Top Ten of 2022.
10. The Northman – Juice Rating 84/100
THE NORTHMAN was the latest from Robert Eggers (THE WITCH, THE LIGHTHOUSE) and it gave us some of the most amazing cinematic moments this year. Alexander Skarsgard catching a spear mid air and hurling it at his attacker. Then climbing the wall with his axe only to run rampage over the entire town. What a whirlwind this movie put me through and that ending, WOW!

9. She Said – Juice Rating 85/100
I love a good Journalism movie, and this was a really good one, with a horrific subject. We all know the name Harvey Weinstein now and know he is a scumbag. But, watching these women navigate the trenches of this story and uncover the systematic abuse that was going on in Hollywood is stunning. Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are both fantastic, and I am so thankful they are able to show the world this story.

8. The Banshees of Inisherin – Juice Rating 87/100
Friendship can be a tricky thing sometimes, especially in Martin McDonagh’s (IN BRUGES) new story. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are hilarious in watching how one friend can simply stop being friends with the other. The movie can be brutal in the nature of its story telling, but I genuinely felt like I laughed in every scene and the performances were great.

7. The Batman – Juice Rating 88/100
The Batman is tired, he is getting boring, no one cares about the character anymore. That is what some people were saying before Matt Reeves took hold of the character. He casted Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader and gave us a new version of the character. One with anger, one who is still finding his way in the world, and one who has not yet reached his full potential. I loved the world they created in this film and I just wanted to dive in and live in it for a few more hours. I cannot wait for the next one of these stories.

6. The Fabelmans – Juice 89/100
I said it in my review, but it is Steven Spielberg doing a story about his childhood. If that does not get you excited I genuinely think you may not like movies. Spielberg is the greatest Director of all time for me so to see him be this vulnerable with his family was special. He shows us why his parents divorce is such an influence on his stories, and why he came to love movies to begin with. If this wins Best Picture I would not be upset in the least.

5. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio – Juice Rating 90/100
For a Pinocchio movie to even warrant conversation these days it has to be spectacularly awful or just spectacular. This seems to be the latter. The stop motion animation looks like it is straight out of an art museum or something because it is stunning. He even changed the story just enough to give it a unique spin on the classic tale. This movie is really just something you have to experience (like a few others on this list), and I am a little sad it was only able to be experienced on Netflix.

4. Avatar: The Way of Water – Juice Rating 91/100
The original Avatar is well known for being the biggest movie of all time, and changing the technology in movies forever. 13 years later he one upped himself with this incredible sequel. Pretty much everything about it is better except maybe the shock factor. But even then the performance capture and the water looked so impeccable it was hard to look at anything else or even follow the story. This movie is already on its way toward 2 billion dollars and much more Avatar will be coming in the future. As long as they keep putting this much care into these films, and James Cameron stays alive, I predict they will continue to thrive.

3. Top Gun: Maverick – Juice Rating 92/100
The movie that took the summer by storm of course has to be on the list. Who would have thought a sequel to Top Gun 30 years later could be even better than the original classic. But, that is exactly what happened because of the way Tom Cruise and Co. were able to utilize new technology Director Joseph Kosinski had these guys with cameras up in the planes and we were getting up close and personal with the action. This was the theater experience of the year and I love what it did for the theaters.

2. RRR – Juice Rating 94/100
I was not able to write a review for this movie because I was late to the party, but holy hell is this movie just an absolute blast. It has everything from Action, to Comedy, to Musical sequences, to Romance, and everything in between. Sure it is 3 hours and in Hindi, but it feels like an absolute breeze. S. S. Ramajouli is a legendary Director in Bollywood and to see Netflix giving him such a big platform is fantastic. I loved everything about this movie, it is campy, it is chaotic and hope everyone gets a chance to see it.

1. Everything Everywhere All at Once – Juice Rating 95/100
What else could it be this year besides this genre bending masterpiece. The Daniels flipped cinema on its head with this one and had Michelle Yeoh jumping through the multiverse to try and figure out her life and her place in the world. This movie also brought us the return of Ke Huy Quan to Hollywood and he could not be more welcome. He is so good in this movie he is arguably the front runner for the supporting actor Oscar. This is a movie that is really hard to explain and you just have to see it, but if you do you will understand why it it is my number one movie of the year.

*A couple Honorable Mentions
- BROS
- NOPE
- DECISION TO LEAVE
- THE WOMAN KING
- GLASS ONION
Well Juicers, as I say every year it has been a great year at the movies and it only looks to keep getting better next year. As always keep supporting the theaters and see movies that way because it is the best way to experience them. Cannot wait to see everyone at the movies in 2023.
