Boxing Recap 5/11

Another weekend of Boxing and we had knockouts and upsets all over the board. It still is just amazing to me the amount of consistently good boxing we get every weekend, so here is my recap of this Saturday’s action.

Saturday May 11 – ESPN

We started the card on ESPN with a rematch of WBO Champion Emanuel Navarrete and former champion Isaac Dogboe. This fight was not nearly as close as the first, as the much taller Navarrete blasted Dogboe from the opening bell. This fight should have been stopped much sooner, but finally the corner of Dogboe threw in the towel in the 12th.

Navarrete seems like a beast and only at 24 he has a bright future ahead of him in the fun 122 lb. division.

In the Main event we had another rematch, this time for Miguel Berchelt’s WBC 130 lb. Title. He faced the tough Francisco Vargas, but again this was another dominant performance from the sitting champion. Berchelt looks like he has continued to improve with every fight, and has been campaigning to face Vasyl Lomachnko. We do not know if he is quite ready for that, but his work rate and accuracy looked incredible in this 6th round stoppage.

Saturday 5/11 – FOX

The Main Event on Fox was supposed to be a Hometown coronation for Unified Light Middleweight Champion Jarrett Hurd. But that is not how this went at all, with Julian Williams coming to fight and edging Hurd in a Fight of the Year candidate. Williams countered well all night, and dropped Hurd when he was coming in. There was no controversy with the scorecards and there was a new Unified Champion crowned.

Williams is the definition of determination and hard work after a loss that could have derailed him. Now he is a champion with a chance to make a lot more money with a possible Unification with the winner of Harrison-Charlo 2.

As always I hope everyone enjoyed and I look forward to the big Heavyweight fight coming next weekend!
