Boxing Recap 4/26-4/27

What a jam packed weekend for the squared circle! We had little guys, we had big guys, we had knockouts and decisions. Of course though it would not be boxing if there was not some controversy as well. Here is my recap of the weekends bouts.

Friday April 26 – DAZN

The main event in LA was the highest stakes fight of the weekend. Belts and Pound for Pound titles were on the line and the action delivered. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and Juan Francisco Estrada (is this the longest two names in a fight ever?) had a fight of the year in their first fight and this second fight they both almost threw 2000 punches again. Sor Rungvisai inexplicably came out fighting Right Handed when he has always fought southpaw, cause Estrada to box his head off for the first 6 or 7 rounds. SSR made a late charge switching back to Southpaw, but it was not enough as Estrada took the title and joined my Pound for Pound list. I would love to see a third fight here and hope that SSR fights his best fight so we can see who really is the best at 115 lbs.

In the Co-Main we had a 122 lb. unification fight between WBA Champion Daniel Roman and IBF Champion TJ Doheny. This was a fight of the year candidate already where Roman dropped Doheny twice, but Doheny fought his butt off to get back in the fight and show a heart the size of the arena. Roman looks like he is really coming into his own and I look forward to a future unification fight with WBC Champion Rey Vargas.

Lastly I want to highlight a fight from the undercard between Jessie Vargas and Humberto Soto. This was a war for the first few rounds until Vargas took over and finished him strong in the 6th round. It looks like it might be time for Soto to hang up the gloves, and Vargas will probably get a big fight soon somewhere around 147-154 lbs.

Saturday April 27 – Showtime

Man what a stinker the main event was in Vegas this weekend. The styles of Robert Easter and Rances Barthelemy really did not mesh at all and created a fight that most fans will want to forget about as soon as possible. When the fight mercifully ended it was scored a draw and everyone left extremely unsatisfied.

Saturday April 27 – DAZN

We had a really interesting card in Lafayette this weekend for the Semi Finals of the World Boxing Super Series. In the Main Event Louisiana native, and rising star, Regis Prograis gained the WBA Super Lightweight Title with a phenomenal performance. He knocked out the tough Kyril Relikh in the sixth round, when Relikh’s corner had seen enough of a beating to throw in the Towel. Now Prograis moves on to the final to fight the winner of Josh Taylor and Ivan Baranchyk. This tourney has had some hiccups but it has really become a star maker for Prograis. He looks like a Pound for Pound candidate after this.

The Co-Main event had the semi final for the 118 lb. tournament between WBA belt holder Nonito Donaire and late replacement Stephon Young. Not much to say about this one as Donaire turned back the clock to outclass and knock out Young Cold. He still better hope Naoya Inoue loses in a few weeks though because I dont know if he wants to face “The Monster.”

I hope everyone enjoyed this fun filled weekend of fights!
