Boxing Recap 8/24

Boxing moved on this weekend with a couple of fun title fights to get us through a slow August in the ring. Here is my recap of the action that took place.

Saturday August 24 – Chelyabinsk, Russia

WBO Light Heavyweight Champion defended his belt for the first time, in his third reign, against the rough and tumble Anthony Yarde. Kovalev was in control most of the fight with his game plan instilled by relatively new trainer Buddy McGirt. He had to show a lot of heart in the 8th when Yarde had him on the ropes, but he came back and knocked out Yarde in the 11th WITH A JAB! This is a tough look for Yarde as he talked a lot of trash but at the end of the day as they there are levels to this game.

Kovalev has been in talks to welcome Canelo to the 175 lb. division however I still would rather see him fight one of the other great challengers at 175 (Bivol, Zurdo Ramirez, Storm Alvarez trilogy etc…).  Either way the Krusher looks like he still has some of his fight left.

Saturday August 24 – Hermosillo, Mexico

WBC Super Flyweight Champion Juan Francisco Estrada battered Dewayne Beamon for his first title defense of his reign. Beamon was very game and even won some rounds I thought, but Estrada was just a lot more accurate and overall a more in shape fighter. Estrada hit him with some mean hooks the entire fight and even was clowning Beamon in the middle of the fight.

Estrada is one of the best pound for pound in the world an they are talking unifications next. I would also like to see a trilogy fight with Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, so there are plenty of options for the champion.

I hope everyone enjoyed the action!
