Good Boys Review

*You know I have to do it

Good Boys is a new movie by Gene Stupnitsky (his debut) and is the second movie this year, after Booksmart, to draw serious inspiration from Superbad. This raunchy, no holds barred comedy about three 6th graders who are just trying to get to a kissing party with their friends. It also happens to be rated R and has a live action South park vibe to it watching these little kids cuss and talk about sex toys. Story aside I laughed a ton in this movie and it is always great to see funny rated R studio comedies. I know they are not able to be seen by everyone but I think they are a great part of the marketplace, that also creates classics for any era like: Stripes, 40 year old virgin, Superbad etc…

This movie is about a day in the friendship of Max, Thor, and Lucas and how they deal with having to fix a problem in order to get to a party. Of course while trying to fix said problem they encounter a lot of fun side experiences on the way. They deal with popular kids, older girls trying to get drugs, and the police at one point. At the end of the day though it is always about their friendship and and how strong it truly is.

Of course, there were moments I thought were a little much or did not really work in the story line, especially the shoe horned in conflict. This was a very funny movie though despite any cliches are necessary story beats.

Stock Up – Jacob Tremblay, Brady Noon, and Keith L. Williams all are great in this movie. They all had to carry many different emotional situations in this and all felt real and genuine. Tremblay particularly has been on a heater with Room, Wonder and now a starring role in this. I think we will be seeing these boys more in the future.

*A couple other tidbits

  • Lil Rel and Retta were great in a tough scene depicting divorcing parents. They had the awkward humor along with the dread that made it impactful.
  • Will Forte as Max’s dad is always a charm on screen.
  • Molly Gordon was in this and Booksmart and hopefully we can see her in something other than a teen comedy soon.

Good Boys is exactly what you think it is, a hilarious movie with little kids saying words you would never think they would say. If that appeals to you, you will enjoy this and if not you probably will not enjoy.
