Another exciting weekend in Madison Square Garden as the “Big Drama Show” comes to town. Here is my preview of all the boxing this weekend.
Saturday June 8
Who: Gennadiy Golovkin (38-1-1 34 KO’s) vs. Steve Rolls (19-0 10 KO’s)
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York
When: 7pm EST/4pm PST
How: DAZN
Implications: This fight is the first for Gennadiy Golovkin (GGG) since he lost to Canelo in September of 2018. He has since signed a massive deal with DAZN in hopes that he will get a third fight with the aforementioned Mr. Alvarez. First though he has to get through a man by the name of Steve Rolls. Who? What? Where? This is easily the first time anyone has hear of Rolls, sure he is undefeated but he is 35 and has never fought someone of note. After last weekend we can never underestimate anyone, however this feels like GGG will walk through rolls in a round or 2.
Look for a big GGG KO and a Canelo callout in MSG on Saturday.
Saturday June 8
Who: Oscar Valdez (25-0 20 KO’s) vs. Jason Sanchez (14-0 7 KO’s)
Where: Reno-Sparks Convention Center
When: 10pm EST/7pm PST
How: ESPN
Implications: Another title defense for the WBO Featherweight Champion here in Reno, NV this Saturday. Top Rank continues to invest in him and it will be fun to see his improvements with the Reynoso’s training him since his brutal war with Scott Quigg. His opponent (judging by the odds) is a no hoper with this being another opportunity to showcase Valdez on ESPN. He is hopefully building toward a fight with Josh Warrington, or Leo Santa Cruz so look for a Valdez KO within 4 rounds here.
*There are prospects littered on both of these cards, but no fights are that notable to be honest.
I hope everyone enjoys another fun weekend!
