There is a decent card this weekend over in London as the MMA leader’s Octagon makes it’s way to the O2 Arena. Here is a preview for 3 of the very good fights on Saturday on ESPN+.
Main Card 3:00pm ET on March 16
Volkan Oezdemir vs. Dominick Reyes
This is a fight that could headline a fight night, these are two very high level 205 lb. fighters. Volkan is a former title challenger who has hands of stone. Dominick is a guy who is a former football player, so he is extremely athletic, and is a very creative fighter for the weight class. This has fight of the night potential and will probably give us a new contender for Jon Jones for whoever wins this.
I think both fighters will have their moments in this. I believe Reyes will have a few too many weapons for Volkan and finish him in the second round. Dominick Reyes Second Round TKO.
Leon Edwards vs. Gunnar Nelson
This is a very interesting fight, we have Gunnar Nelson coming off a bloody victory over Cowboy Oliveira, and Leon Edwards coming off a 5 round war with Cowboy Cerrone (ironic huh?). Gunnar Nelson of course is well known for being a training partner of the Notorious Conor Mcgregor, but he is a very well rounded fighter who specializes in Jiu Jitsu. Edwards is more of a stand up fighter but he has not lost since 2015 against now champ Kamaru Usman, so he has been on an upward trajectory.
I think Leon will have his moments on the feet and probably stretch this out to the Third round. I just think Gunnar will get him down and take his back at some point and choke him out. Gunnar Nelson, Third Round Submission.
Darren Till vs. Jorge Masvidal
We have a Welterweight BANGER in the Main Event folks. Former Title Challenger Darren “The Gorilla” Till fights on home soil against one of the baddest dudes in the UFC Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal. Both of these guys like to stand and bang so this could have the potential for an extremely entertaining fight. Masvidal lost two times to finish 2017 and we have not seen him since, so rust might play a factor in this. Till of course lost to former Champion Tyron Woodley and has been known to have issues cutting to 170 lbs. So I think the bigger fight for him this weekend is just making the weight.
I believe Till is just a younger, bigger, and better striker overall and we can look at what they both did to Cerrone to judge that. It took Masvidal a round longer to get him out of there than Till, and that is not always the best way to judge a fight. However, Till also beat Wonderboy Thompson while Jorge lost to him. So, if Till makes the weight in a healthy manner he should be able to handle Jorge. Darren Till by Second Round TKO.
I hope everyone enjoys this card and appreciates how many great fights we continue to see on a week to week basis.
