The Adam Project Review

*No twists spoiled…

IMDB Synopsis

After accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self for a mission to save the future.

“It is easier to be angry than it is to be sad”

When Shawn Levy teamed up with Ryan Reynolds to make FREE GUY last year, who knew it would be the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Their newest movie, which is on Netflix, THE ADAM PROJECT gives both of them a chance to do what they do best. Levy to make a smart, fun family movie, and Reynolds to do his Ryan Reynolds schtick, but this time with a worthy teammate.

Like FREE GUY you are just dropped into this story, and are not given a ton of backstory at the beginning as to why Adam (Reynolds) is going back in time to find his Dad (Mark Ruffalo). However, he meets up with his younger self (Walker Scobell) and chaos ensues of course. The movie is basically a family comedy at it’s core, but we get a huge sci-fi adventure in the middle of all that, and it looks so much better than what we would normally get on Netflix.

That leads me into the camera work from Tobias Schliesser because again it really was so much better than your typical Netflix movie. Shawn Levy movies have a good look usually and this was no exception, especially with some of the whirlwind battle scenes. I loved Rob Simonsen’s score as well, it really added to those battle scenes but also felt right when they had the emotional moments as well. However, more than the score the music choices were very on point throughout, here were a few of the great songs they had.

  • Gimme Some Lovin’ – Spencer Davis Group
  • Good Times Bad Times – Led Zeppelin
  • Foreplay/Longtime – Boston

Stock Neutral – Ryan Reynolds

He basically has a form of speaking that is his own at this point which Walker mimics pretty well. Other than some of the emotional stuff he does, it is pretty much par for the course as far as what he brings to movies at this point.

*A couple other tidbits

  • It is always great to see Jennifer Garner, she just brings a smile to your face when you see her.
  • Zoe Saldana in a limited role still makes a major impact.
  • Catherine Keener plays the villain, and the worst part of the movie easily is the CGI of her younger self.
  • The FACEOFF sweatshirt joke made me laugh.

I had a lot of fun with this movie. I think the story could be fleshed out a bit more, and I wish we spent more time with Ruffalo’s character, but I think overall it is a good movie. I think family’s sitting down turning on Netflix will enjoy this more than most of the family action movies on there. I look forward to what Levy and Reynolds decide to do together next.
