All of our lives we are told to follow our dreams and push to be the absolute best we can be. But what happens when our life’s dream is destroyed right when you achieve it? How would you react?
Where’d You Go Bernadette is a new movie out right now that is based on a New York Times Bestseller by Maria Semple. It tells the story of an architect named Bernadette who had her dream project shattered into a parking lot and decides to leave her family due to many mental issues. Her daughter Bee (played by Emma Nelson) leads the charge to find Bernadette and bring her home.
This adaptation was directed by the great Richard Linklater (School of Rock, Dazed and Confused etc..) and he brought a lot of style and flair to the look of the movie. I just thought the story was not there for this. Bernadette does not even leave until almost 3/4 through the movie so it feels like there is a lot of meandering and some overall pacing issues. I felt the beginning was very strong but as the story kind of wandered I found myself trailing off.
Stock Watch
Stock Neutral – Cate Blanchett is one of the greatest actresses of all time and gives a typically fantastic performance in this. She was as crazy as could be in this and really played off all the other characters really well. I just do not know if this will raise her profile that much.
Stock Neutral – Richard Linklater is a great director with some classic movies in his filmography. This one will not go down as one of his best, but I do not think it hurts his stock for future projects.
What a weird and interesting movie this is. It is not the worst movie of the year but it is also not the best, it is just kinda there. One of the more mediocre movies of the year in my opinion but hey its August and most movies have been pretty bad this month, save a few.
