The Beatles are easily one of the most influential pieces of culture in history. Their music has been listened to, analyzed, and immortalized through the years to a point where if someone has not heard of them they might be living under a rock.
The new movie Yesterday, directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Steve Jobs), ask the question what would happen if a man woke up and he was the only person in the world who could remember The Beatles. That man is Jack Malik (Himesh Patel), a struggling musician, who wakes up after an accident to find out the world has completely changed. His manager Ellie Appleton (Lily James) has always been his biggest supporter, but things change when she sees there might be something more with the two of them. So for Jack he has to choose between becoming a superstar with stolen music or find happiness with someone who cares about him.
Stock Watch
Stock Up – Himesh Patel made his film debut in this movie and was an absolute revelation. Not only was he very believable, emotional and funny as an actor, but he also sand and performed The Beatles music incredibly well. I am very excited about his future.
Stock Up – Lily James has been on a torrid rise through the ranks to become one of the actresses I am most excited about seeing on screen. From Cinderella, to Baby Driver, to the Darkest Hour, a star making turn in Mamma Mia 2 and now this? She does a great job in this playing the always positive, yet hurting inside love interest and brought great energy to every scene she was in.
Stock Down – I was disappointed in the Kate Mckinnon performance as the evil manager who takes over Jack’s life. Sure that was the part she was supposed to play, but it just never felt real and none of the persona she brought made me think Jack would ever follow her.
Stock Neutral – Danny Boyle has long been one of the most creative directors in Hollywood, and I am glad to see he is still bringing original stories to the big screen. This was not his best movie but it was in the upper echelon I would say. So he remains one of the top Directors in the world.
*A couple other tidbits
- I loved all the Beatles songs they chose, but Jack going to visit all the sites felt a bit corny.
- If there is no Oasis in the new world, what song did Jack sing at the grade school talent show?
- ED SHEERAN!!
This was a very fun movie and did not do anything to hurt The Beatles legacy. Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis were a great pairing and made the Rom Com formula much more enjoyable. I hope many people see this all Across the Universe (sorry I had to).

81 for a movie it sounds like you thought was good but very flawed and maybe unnecessary? Interesting….
